To Mombasa

Woke up with no alarm this morning, yeah! Still it was hard to get up so headed for the dining room and had a cup of coffee.
Saw Samual and Elija in the parking lot getting ready to head out on another safari and just had to tell them how much we had missed them on our Tanzanian safari. After visiting a bit, I finally got my bags organized and then breakfasted on museli and fruit and it was time to go to the airport.
Ben drove us this time. It took only about 40 minutes. There was very little security at the airport. Viv was able to take a big bottle of water right through to the plane. Philip was at the airport to meet us and take us to Sand Island Beach. He said it was a 35 km drive but it took us two and a half hours. Partly this was because we stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few staples (our accommodations are self catering). The rest of the time was spent navigating horrible traffic through smelly streets with piles of garbage rotting in the ditch and an interminable wait in the sun for the ferry that carries traffic from Mombassa island to the south coast.

The heat and humidity knocked us for a loop. As soon as we got to the cabin, we headed for the ocean for a refreshing swim only to find it was as warm as a hot bath and not deep enough to swim. Diani Reef is located a few hundred meters off shore and ithe surf stops there. Between the reef and the beach is a sand island and a pool of water that at low tide is ankle to knee deep and at high tide might have pockets up to thigh deep. Nonetheless we enjoyed getting wet and soaking all the dust from two weeks of safari from our pores.
It was cerael for supper and an early night for us. A lack of sea breeze that night meant our cottage was hot and airless. Survival overcame modesty as clothes were tossed off and we lay listlessy on top of our beds. Eventually sleep overcame us.
